2010-2011 Community Implementation
Grants
Communities can play a vital role in helping to promote increased
physical activity and healthy eating opportunities for residents.
The Rapides Foundation seeks to strengthen community
groups to engage residents and stakeholders to develop and implement
strategies to improve these opportunities for adults and adolescents
in Central Louisiana in three main environments: physical activity
environment, food environment, and childrens environments
(outside of school including childcare, pre-school and after-school.)
Based on Community Assessment findings, the purpose of the Community
Implementation Grant is to pilot promising community-based strategies
and promote teamwork among stakeholders to improve healthy eating
and physical activity in the nine parishes served by the Foundation.
These grants are for nonprofit organizations, government entities,
faith-based community groups, and/or community coalitions that
would like to enhance or strengthen their existing health promotion
activities, or add obesity prevention and control to their scope
of work.

More than 31% of adults in The Rapides Foundation
service area are overweight or obese. The rate of children overweight
or obese is more than double the national rate of 14%.
Many diseases are associated with overweight and obesity. Persons
who are overweight or obese are at risk for high blood pressure,
type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, and some types
of cancer to name a few. Absenteeism at schools, lost productivity
at work, and reduced quality of life represent just a short
list of the social and economic costs attributable to obesity,
poor nutrition, and inactivity-related illnesses.
Get Healthy Cenla wants to:
- Create or improve opportunities for adults and youth to
engage in safe, accessible physical activity.
- Increase the accessibility of healthy foods while reducing
exposure to unhealthy foods and beverages
